Report: A top defenseman in Saskatchewan, Mayo comfortability with the puck and footwork saw continuous improvements as the season progressed. A defenseman with no glaring weakness. Mayo provides the complete package as a defender. He’s got the size, skill, skating and physical qualities of a high end prospect. Mayo is more confident as puck rusher than he is as a puck facilitator, he’s got good feet and he’s able to work his way up ice quickly with efficiency. Exploiting any sort of lane, you give him, his hands are quick and tight, while his footwork is shifty and hard to contain at this level. Physical play is Mayo’s best trait however. He’s solid in his defensively zone and will contain players to the outside with physical play along the wall and shutdown potential as a defender. Mayo has an absolute cannon from the blue line, he packs it with a loaded release but its heavy and it often finds its way to the net. While I don’t think he is a great puck mover, he has good vision but needs to learn to execute on it a little bit better, he likes to snap everything off his stick which at times leads to a miss fire. A mean player in front of his net who will make you pay for being in the blue paint. Defensively he has good positioning and his eyes are always engaged. Overall I think Mayo is a top three round defender, likely a top ten player in Saskatchewan. Skating needs a bit of work, it’s a lanky stride with not a lot of knee bend. Needs to learn to get his eyes up ice quicker below the goal line. Whatever team selects Mayo is getting a hard working individual with a balanced on ice game from the backend.
