Future Cast: Calgary Hitmen

2019 WHL Draft Summary

The Calgary Hitmen made not one but two major acquisitions of defensemen in the first round of the draft. Coming in with two picks in the top thirteen, they moved the eleventh and more for Jett Woo from the Moose Jaw Warriors, one of the best defensemen in the WHL. Woo is a minute logging two-way defensemen who can shutdown top opposing players and provide offensive with crisp move movement, Woo will immediately be the teams number one defensemen and play in all situations. Adding defensively once again, the Hitmen then took Grayden Siepmann at pick thirteen, a selections I am a big fan of as Siepmann is a pure puck moving defensemen with loads of offensive upside and a cerebral mind, the natural skill set he possess will make him such a talent in the WHL. After the first round the Hitmen made nine more selections, focused on adding strong skaters who can play physical and gritty. An example of this was there second round pick Brandon Whynott whose an explosive tenacious power winger who asserts himself on the forecheck and plays hard. They also took our top ranked goalie Ethan Buenaventura who will play in the WHL. Every selection that the Hitmen made from Canada were on our draft lists and are players with the physical tools to potentially play in the WHL. I could see more than half this draft class settle into a full-time WHL position one day.
